The increase was a result of Peru's strong economic development and healthy growth in the overall insurance industry. This was further encouraged by the occurrence of natural disasters during the review period, such as the earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 in 2007 and floods in subsequent years. As a result of these events, insurance companies shared a larger proportion of revenues with the reinsurance companies to share greater risk in order to avoid substantial losses from the unforeseen natural disaster events. The Peruvian government, in collaboration with regulatory body SBS, took a number of actions to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the country's insurance industry.
