Patriotism aside, Mr. Krol cites sharply rising foreign workers’ incomes and standard of living that no longer make their country a haven for cheap third-world labor. Trans-oceanic shipping costs have greatly increased as well. “Those factors, combined with security issues and the high cost of maintaining supervisory personnel overseas, have caused the great awakening to re-shoring,” he stated.
Mr. Krol also sees continued growth for contract manufacturing because original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) remain fearful of a recessionary reappearance and are thus reluctant to expand their workforce or invest in capital equipment .“However, we’ve learned that automating with latest-generation equipment actually lowers costs through labor-saving efficiency. Equipment delivering optimum quality control also achieves cost savings. That’s why we’ve installed automatic optical inspection (AOI) and x-ray inspection.” Mr. Krol also bases a major share of IMET’s success on specialization. “Trying to be a multi-provider can confuse the marketplace. We let our prospects know electronics engineering and PCB assembly is what we do best and we stick with it.” In fact, the IMET name says it all.
