Matusadona National Park; A Game Reserve in Zimbabwe

Matusadona National Park is a relatively unknown national park in Zimbabwe and because of this it has become one of the best Zimbabwean national parks to visit.

It boasts a unique combination of pristine and rugged wilderness with the water frontage of Lake Kariba. It is a park comprising some 1400 square kilometers of diverse flora and fauna.

The Matusadona National park is surrounded by the Ume River in the west and the Sanyati River in the east. This park proves to be a fascinating safari destination. Entry into the park can be done in two ways; either by boat on lake Kariba or through the Karoi –kamativi road by car.

Large herds of elephant and buffalo inhabit the area , along with plentiful antelope, hyaena and lions. There is also a descent population of endangered black rhinoceros. The park is home to what is considered to be the highest concentration of lions per square kilometer in Africa. Bird life is compelling , with over 240 species recorded in the park . Lake Cariba is teeming with crocodiles and you can see them sunbathing at intervals along the shore.

A range of interesting activities are offered in the Matusadona National park such as; game drives, safaris, night viewing , game walks, hikes and fishing. Lake Kariba offers the opportunity to try your hand at tiger and beam fishing, which is immensely popular. Swimming is not advised except in a swimming cage on the back of some of the larger houseboats. A walking safari is the best way to explore the park . In addition visitors can stay in cruises or houseboats along the long shoreline in the north. Sailing safaris can also be undertaken ,also a network of roads , although uncomfortable , provides more opportunities to view wildlife, making it an excellent all-round safari location.

The park is open to visitors throughout the year as the weather is surprisingly pleasant. There are three camps; Ume, Muuyu Elephant point and Mbalabala. Each of the camp offer accommodation in fully equipped family units. Moreover, Spurwing Island and Matusadona water lodge are two attractive lodge sites in the middle of the Matusadona shoreline.
