Backyard Roller Coaster Project Stays on Track

Supporting Science and Math Education, CoasterDad.com Gains Popularity, Expands Project

Orinda, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/27/2014 -- The CoasterDad Project, an organization that teaches kids math and science by building backyard roller coasters has its latest project well underway in Northern California. The company's latest backyard roller coaster is being built for the family of local business owner Jeff Jerge. "When my son found the CoasterDad videos online, he couldn't talk about anything else," said Mr. Jerge. "Abraham watched the videos over and over, and started drawing pictures what his roller coaster would look like.

CoasterDad. founder Will Pemble, along with his son Lyle, met with the Jerges and began to plan Abraham's backyard roller coaster. "We let the kids do planning. They bring amazing creativity and excitement to the project, and that excitement translates into passion for learning," said Pemble. "If there's nothing more than a few math problems between you and your own backyard roller coaster, you're going to do the math. Every time. That's the secret of The CoasterDad Project. We give kids good, immediate reasons for learning."

"When Will asked Abraham to help figure out what materials we'd need to build the coaster, I didn't think he'd go for it. Math isn't his favorite subject at school. So, I was amazed to see him and Will doing multiplication and division problems for a full hour," said Abraham's mother Kim Jerge. "It was the first time Abraham used math for something he wanted, and he had fun doing it. It was a beautiful moment, and I can't thank Will enough."

Abraham's Roller Coaster, as The CoasterDad Project calls it, is taking shape in the Jerge's backyard. The ride will start in a custom treehouse, make several twists and turns, and then return to the treehouse at the completion of its 250 foot circuit. The CoasterDad Project provides construction and design assistance, as well as taking time to teach the family and neighbors about the physics involved in backyard roller coasters. "Once the word is out that a roller coaster is going up in somebody's backyard, the kids come running. They bring questions and they want to understand it all. We're thrilled to stop what we're doing and teach the kids how it all goes together, and how it all works. It's a privilege to share this exciting work with the kids and we know the memories and learning will last a lifetime," says Pemble.
