Hi-Tech Treasure Hunt Project Launches on Kickstarter

Kansas City, MO -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/29/2014 -- Geocaching is knowledge-based tourism combined with exciting treasure hunting There are six million addicts and they are growing at 30% annually. Gary Jenkins and Melissa Gard are launching a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter on July 28th, 2014. They want to raise money for a GeoTour with caches hidden at clandestine Underground Railroad Stations from Missouri through Kansas to Nebraska.

The area is particularly famous for being a part of the Freedom Seeker route. Jenkins has made the documentary film, Freedom Seekers: Stories From the Western Underground Railroad. Now, he hopes to educate tourists about the local culture and history in a fun way that would attract families and adventure seekers from all over the nation. "I am going to raise money from folks like myself, individuals who are interested in history and want to share that interest," said Jenkins. "I believe a GeoTour will be educational and benefit local businesses along the path."

Geocachers use a free smartphone GPS application to find “the treasure”, making the activity a fun family adventure and allowing the participants discover hidden gems known only to local enthusiasts. For example, participants will visit the gravesite of a Freedom Seeker who made his way from Parkville, Missouri through Quindaro, fought in the Civil War and is buried in the Wakarusa River Valley.

The supporters of the crowdfunding project will receive rewards, including a replica map of the Kansas Underground Railroad route drawn by famous historian William Connelly in 1918, free admssion to the John Brown Cave, two day adventure tours, DVD, a book about John Brown and the Underground Railroad and a uniquely designed Underground Railroad trackable Geocoin.

Kickstarter has been a go-to place for video game producers, movie makers and artists. Gary Jenkins, who has supported several crowdfunding projects himself, hopes to use the power of the crowd to attract interest to geocaching among local families and to bring tourists interested in exploring the American history through outdoor adventures.
