The oral care category has grown in size over the review period, having overcome the negative performance recorded after the onset of the financial crisis, as sales fell in 2008 and 2009. However, as basic oral care is seen as essential to Danes, by 2010 the category returned to positive value growth and in the last three years of the review period the rate has remained at around 2%.

Competitive Landscape

The Danish oral care category is relatively competitive, with the three leading companies accounting for a combined share of 48% in 2013. Colgate-Palmolive A/S leads, with its Colgate brand, accounting for a 19% value share in 2013. With a 15% share, Unilever Danmark A/S is ranked second, a position achieved through its popular Zendium brand. It is followed in third place by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer HealthCare, which is present with the Aquafresh brand with a 14% value share. Colgate is the leader because it actively maintains its strong position through intense marketing campaigns, mainly on television. It also benefits from good positioning in modern grocery retailers.
