Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/01/2014 -- In Uruguay there is not a tradition of smoking cigars and cigarillos and with the exception of some high-income consumers who do smoke cigars regularly, the vast majority of cigars and cigarillos consumers are occasional smokers. The traditionally high prices of Cuban hand-made cigars, which became even more expensive after the tax adjustments of 2007, have put these products out of the reach of even some of the affluent consumers and sales of large cigars have declined sharply.

Competitive Landscape

La Republicana, a daughter company of C?a Industrial de Tabacos Monte Paz (Monte Paz) continued to lead cigars and cigarillos volume sales in Uruguay, with a 67% market share in 2013. La Republicana imports and distributes bestselling brands from Swisher Sweets and Henri Wintermans and added Luis Gonzaga cigars from Cigarros Misioneros to its portfolio in 2012. The company remains unchallenged in cigarillos sales with several product options from Swisher International Group. Domestic Puros Don Juan Capurro stayed in second position with a 13% share in 2013, closely followed by Suc R S?nchez Nogueira with 12% almost entirely derived from sales of Royal Agio Cigars NV Panter and Mehari?s cigarillos. Cuban brands from Corporaci?n Habanos currently imported and distributed (since late 2013) by Zincro for Xinet fell to fourth place with a 1% combined volume share.

Industry Prospects

Volume sales of cigars and cigarillos are expected to post a 2% CAGR over the forecast period and overcome the expected decline in sales of large cigars. Cigar smokers trading down to the less expensive hand-made alternatives are foreseen to fuel future volume growth. The effect of future volume growth will be somewhat minimised to result in a 2% CAGR (at constant 2013 prices) as value sales of large cigars sales decline and lose weight in the total price equation.
