Survey Says, Demand for Superminis Grows in the UK

More Brits are opting to drive compact or small cars than ever before.

Crawley, West Sussex -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/07/2015 -- In 2014, 2,476,435 new cars were registered in the UK, which is the highest level of registrations since 2004. Many of the new registrations were for superminis like the Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Fiesta. The top selling car in 2014 was a supermini.

During 2014, 131,254 new Ford Fiestas were registered across the UK. Sales of this vehicle were driven by an increasing need for vehicles that are economical to run.

The Vauxhall Corsa was not far behind in position number 3. During 2014, 81,783 new Vauxhall Corsas were registered and this vehicle is selling well during 2015. In February 2015 more Vauxhall Corsa were sold than any other vehicle, so it is certainly performing strongly. This is not really a surprise given the fact that the Corsa outsold all other cars for six years only losing the top spot when to the Fiesta in 2014.

One small car specialist in Crawley commented that 2014 had been their busiest year to date with demand coming from all sections of society. More elderly drivers were deciding to downsize to cheaper vehicles that are easier to drive and better suited to their lifestyle. New drivers are also buying small cars because they offer relatively low running costs and insurance costs.

The Crawley dealer also commented that even families were buying compacts as second cars. The fact that superminis are getting bigger has helped to drive sales in this sector.

Most in the car industry expect demand for compact cars to stay high during 2015. However, falling fuel costs may put a dent in the sale of these economical cars.

The fact that UK consumers have more spare cash in their pocket because of falling living costs and increasing employment is also likely to have a negative impact on sales of compact cars. Many in the industry are also expecting some British consumers to release cash from their pensions and to use it to buy new cars. These consumers are more likely to buy bigger cars than they are to buy a small, economical vehicle.
