For nearly three decades, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been used to help patients find relief from chronic lower back and limb pain. This procedure works to eliminate pain through a soft and thin wire that is inserted into the spinal column. The wire conducts gentle electrical currents generated by a small stimulator. These signals block the brain's ability to sense pain from injured or damaged areas of the spine. Good candidates for SCS include those who have had no success with conventional pain treatments, or who have had spinal surgery but still suffer with significant pain.
Patients who opt to receive SCS must undergo a short trial, or test run, with a temporary wire and stimulator. The purpose of the trial procedure is to help the patient and doctor determine whether or not long term SCS will provide adequate pain relief. All SCS trials performed at The Spine & Sports Health Center are performed by Interventional Pain Management Specialist, Ron Ben-Meir, D.O. in an outpatient setting. The trial procedure itself is non-surgical, and requires only a local anesthetic and mild sedation.
During this 30-minute procedure, Dr. Ben-Meir inserts a wire into the patient's spine through a thin needle. A small battery is then taped to the patient's back. A remote control device is used to adjust electrical currents generated by the battery in order to achieve optimal pain relief. A follow-up office visit is scheduled for a few days later in order to remove the temporary wire and battery. At this time the patient and doctor will determine if the trial was a success. If good pain relief was achieved, the patient will be scheduled to receive a permanent wire implant and stimulator.
