The Future of Printed Display in the Digital Age

Preston, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/08/2016 -- With the advent and rapid progression of the digital revolution, the pace of business in the UK and undoubtedly around the world has increased exponentially. This is bringing with it a wave of new product innovations and effective ways of reaching your target audience. Many businesses have adapted and evolved business practice to meet the rapidly changing demands of consumers, using digital media for a variety of operations, opening up new avenues to gain and communicate with new clients and to promote and advertise products and services.

As opposed to ten years ago, it is now commonplace for businesses to have a website and it is equally as common for prospective customers to search the web for their desired service. Gone are the days of pulling out the Yellow Pages to source companies and businesses to fulfill your needs. Any business that does not have a website and is unwilling to embrace the digital revolution and the new business opportunities it brings will be left behind, whilst their competitors with websites and digital practices will enjoy the lion's share of leads, enquiries and resultant sales.

In terms of impact, the print, display and signage industry has been affected by the digital revolution, which has reduced the need for certain formats of printed literature such as, product brochures and marketing pamphlets, with consumers preferring to search online for instant results with relative ease.

Most businesses within this sector have had to adapt and do so fast to keep up-to-date with the changes brought about by the online world. However, for many this has also brought a rake of new opportunities for businesses within the print and display industry, being able to diversify into digital signage and display in a variety of commercial buildings such as shopping centres, airports, schools and a whole host of other business premises.

According to figures from Smithers Pura, the global output of Point of Sale (PoS) and signage in 2014 was valued at $49.4 billion, with indoor PoS/signage reaching a staggering $30.7 billion. Outdoor signage and PoS came out at $18.7 billion, highlighting growth in digital display.

It has been estimated that the marked growth in this area is set to impact on printed PoS and Signage which is expected to decline at a rate of 0.4% per annum in volume terms and 0.7% in real value terms leading up to the year 2020. However the output for indoor printed signage and PoS is set to grow at an average annual rate of 1.2% in volume terms and 0.3% in value terms in the same period of time.

Whilst the digital era has truly revolutionised the face of business, the figures show there is still very much a need for window display and graphic solutions and printed promotional material to effectively showcase branding and to market and advertise businesses. For example, large scale commercial premises such as shopping centres and airports may utilise digital signage but the cost of developing, maintaining and changing digital displays for most SMEs is simply out of the question.

Effective printed Point of Sale and signage provides eye-catching and visually stunning displays attracting the attention of consumers whilst being easy to update with relatively low costs, winning the contest between the two very easily.

A spokesperson for Lustalux commented "As professional installers of high tech graphic solutions for walls and windows, it is easy to compare the two mediums and each has its own unique merits in marketing and advertising. Whilst it may seem that one may overtake the other, digital signage and display is not a direct competitor and is often used in conjunction with printed display solutions to achieve an effective result in a variety of commercial applications."
