Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club Offers Valley's First Ongoing Women's Self-Defense Classes

Phoenix, AZ -- (SBWIRE) -- 02/06/2017 -- Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club in Phoenix, Arizona will begin offering the valley's first ongoing women's self-defense class starting February 4. Classes will take place weekly on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The female-led women's self-defense classes will provide ongoing training in women's self-defense, which is significantly different than martial arts training.

Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club is a hybrid grappling school that provides classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No Gi grappling, Catch as Catch Can wrestling, and Tae Kwon Do for adults and children. "Parents who saw the self-defense taught in our children's classes requested a women's self-defense class," said Gilbert Olivas, lead professor at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club. "We found that the one-time seminars don't provide the practice and reinforcement needed to develop strong skills that help ensure a woman under attack can get away," he added.

The women's self-defense classes at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu club will be led by women using the Brutal Barb curriculum. The Brutal Barb curriculum focuses on improving situational awareness, learning to use body language and verbal skills to de-escalate aggression and circumvent attacks, and drill self-defense techniques, especially those to counter the most common attacks on women.

Barbara Atkinson, who developed the Brutal Barb curriculum, has been training in mixed martial arts for more than 12 years. She found that the one-day women's self-defense seminars always recommend continuing to practice the defense techniques presented, but don't provide an opportunity to continue practicing in a training environment. Barbara also found that most women's self-defense instructors teach as if a women's most likely attacker is a stranger. She found that the predominantly male instructors typically have martial arts training, but they do not seem to understand the nature of violence against women.

The cost for the women's self-defense classes at Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club is currently just $5 per person per class. Young women ages 16 and 17 may attend with parental permission. Girls 12 to 15 may attend with an accompanying female parent or guardian. Black Flag Jiu-Jitsu Club is located at 6026 N. 23rd Avenue in Phoenix, Arizona.
