CCGNJ Warns of Link Between Alcohol and Problem Gambling During Alcohol Awareness Month

Hamilton, NJ -- (SBWIRE) -- 04/28/2017 -- The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey (CCGNJ) offers support, treatment and hope for New Jersey residents struggling with a gambling disorder. As April is Alcohol Awareness Month, the CCGNJ takes this time to warn of the connection between alcohol use and problem gambling.

Problem gamblers and people who are learning how to gamble in NJ are susceptible to alcohol dependence and misuse. Problem gambling and alcohol use can combine to create a multitude of issues such as binge drinking and reckless behavior.

Problem gamblers who also use alcohol may turn to drinking to celebrate wins or alleviate depression after a major loss. The lack of inhibition brought on by alcohol intoxication may also lead to reckless choices such as gambling beyond one's means or "chasing losses" in an attempt to gain back money lost.

"The connection between alcohol and gambling can be nefarious," CCGNJ Executive Director Neva Pryor stated. "We take time during Alcohol Awareness Month to reflect on this connection and help people who are struggling."

The CCGNJ is dedicated to delivering treatment and support by providing resources such as webinars and information, linking people to helpful groups like Gamblers Anonymous, offering a 24/7 confidential hotline and spreading public awareness.

Established in 1987 by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc., Alcohol Awareness Month is a time set aside to understand alcoholism and its causes, increase awareness and dismantle the barriers, such as problem gambling, that stand in the way of treatment and recovery.

This year, the month's theme is called "Connecting the Dots: Opportunities for Recovery." Events this year are focused on educating people about the treatment and prevention of alcohol misuse, especially toward America's youth.

Those who wish to find out more information about the link between alcohol and problem gambling during Alcohol Awareness Month and how to avoid gambling issues such as racetrack wagering in Monmouth, NJ, are encouraged to call the CCGNJ's hotline at 800-GAMBLER or visit online at http://www.800gambler.org/.
